NTRI Epidemiological ResearchThe Epidemiological Research Group coordinates the following projects: Victorian State Trauma Registry (VSTORM)A collaboration between Monash University, the University of Melbourne, the Royal Melbourne Hospital, the Alfred Hospital and the Victorian Department of Human Services. Funded by the Victorian Department of Human Services Victorian State Trauma Outcome Registry and Monitoring (VSTORM) Group The VSTORM Group based at the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at Monash University coordinate the Victorian State Trauma Registry. Based on recommendations from a 1999 Ministerial Taskforce on Trauma and Emergency Services, a new system of trauma care has been implemented in Victoria. In order to ascertain the effectiveness of this system and to provide ongoing monitoring of major trauma patients, a Statewide Trauma Registry was established. VSTORM was established to collect standardised trauma data from each hospital in Victoria in order to monitor the performance of the State's trauma system. Victorian Orthopaedic Trauma Registry (VOTOR)A collaboration between the Alfred Hospital Department of Orthopaedics, the Royal Melbourne Hospital Department of Orthopaedics, and the Department of Epidemiology & Preventive Medicine, Monash University. The Orthopaedic Trauma Registry is a comprehensive registry and database of orthopaedic injuries, treatment, complications and outcomes based on admissions to both Adult Level 1 Trauma Centres. Outcomes will be recorded using specific injury evaluation tools, and quality of life measurements that are avaiable and have been validated in the orthopaedic literature. The data will be used to perform regular review of outcomes of all categories of injuries recorded. Treatment options will be compared within the trauma registry patient group. Results will be benchmarked against other published results and predictors of outcomes will be modeled. Complications will be examined to seek alternative low morbidity options. Funded by the Victorian Trauma Foundation Alfred Trauma Registry - Epidemiological ResearchThe Trauma Registry, established in July 1999, is a comprehensive trauma database that chronicles the major trauma and selected minor trauma work undertaken at The Alfred. It contributes substantially to the Victorian State Trauma Outcome Registry. The Trauma Registry plays a pivotal role in trauma related research activities. The Alfred Trauma Registry, based within the Department of Trauma Surgery was established in late 1998, and serves to detail all major and selected minor trauma work undertaken at the Alfred. The registry collects patient information from all major trauma admissions, all trauma ICU admissions, all trauma transfers and all deaths after injury. The scope of the registry has grown considerably and is now linked to the clinical unit with ongoing exchange of information. This registry thus provides a major database for trauma related research activities largely derived from the considerable major trauma dataset in the future. The main functions of the Alfred Trauma Registry are to chronicle trauma activity at the Alfred, monitor the quality and service delivery and to supply information to the Victorian State Trauma Registry. The Trauma Registry also provides information for, and contributes to, both the Alfred trauma management and quality improvement committee and the Alfred trauma morbidity and mortality subcommittee. The Emergency Research GroupOverseen by A/Prof. Mark Fitzgerald, the Emergency Research Group is currently establishing a major Trauma Research Project funded by the VTF to look at Emergency Trauma Reception and Resuscitation. |
